Boy Scouts Partners with EPA

Healthcare executive Andy Leeka led the Los Angeles Good Samaritan medical center for nearly 25 years. In addition to his support of professional organizations such as the Hospital Association of California, Andy Leeka has also volunteered with several nonprofits, including the Boys Scouts of America (BSA).

For the celebration of the EPA's semicentennial, the agency and the BSA have collaborated on a new award program that promotes environmental education within the organization. Between 2020 and the end of 2021, eligible Boy Scouts can earn merit badges based on their involvement in conservation and public health service projects.

The award criteria align with the objectives of the EPA National Environmental Education Act, which aims to expand access to education on topics such as wildlife, soil, and water conservation. To receive the special EPA award, a scout must first obtain merit badges in public health, earth science, animal science, and outdoor activities. Scouts are also required to complete six hours of relevant community service.
